Sequential
In Sequential mode, test cases run one after another in the order they appear in the suite. Each case starts from the exact state the previous case left the app in. They share a single execution context on a single device.When to use it
Use Sequential when your test cases form a connected flow — when the success of one case depends on what happened in the previous one. Classic example:What happens on failure
By default, a Sequential suite continues to the next case even if one fails. This gives you the full picture of what passed and what failed across the entire flow in one run. If a failure in one case makes all subsequent cases meaningless — for example, if a login failure makes every post-login test impossible — you can configure the suite to Stop on first failure. This prevents wasted execution time and avoids misleading failure cascades in the report.Limitations
- Runs on one device at a time — cases cannot be parallelised
- Slower overall than Isolated for the same number of cases
- A flaky early case can destabilise everything that comes after it
Isolated
In Isolated mode, every test case runs completely independently. Each case starts from a clean state with no knowledge of what other cases did. Because cases have no dependencies on each other, Quash can run them simultaneously across multiple connected devices.When to use it
Use Isolated when your test cases are self-contained — when any single case would make sense running on its own without the others. Good candidates for Isolated:- Search functionality tests
- Notification behaviour tests
- Profile editing tests
- Settings screen tests
- Individual form validation tests
Parallel execution
Isolated suites unlock parallel execution. If you have 20 test cases and 4 connected devices, Quash distributes the cases across the 4 devices — roughly 5 cases per device running simultaneously. A suite that would take 40 minutes sequentially completes in around 10 minutes. You do not assign cases to devices manually. Quash handles the distribution automatically based on how many devices are selected when you trigger the run.Limitations
- Each case must be fully self-contained — it cannot rely on state from another case
- If cases share a dependency (like needing a specific account to exist), that dependency must be handled inside each individual case, not by a preceding case

Switching modes
You can switch a suite between Sequential and Isolated at any time using the toggle in the top right of the suite view. Switching does not affect the test cases — only how they are executed. If you switch a suite that was Sequential to Isolated, review the test cases first to confirm none of them depend on state from a preceding case. State dependencies that worked in Sequential will silently fail in Isolated because each case starts fresh.Mixed coverage strategy
Sequential and Isolated are not mutually exclusive across your testing strategy — use both. A common pattern:- Smoke suite — Isolated, Critical priority only, runs on every PR, fast parallel execution
- Regression suite — Isolated, all priorities, runs nightly, full parallel execution
- E2E flow suites — Sequential, one suite per major user journey, runs before releases
