Happy World Tester’s Day!

On September 9, 1947, the team led by Grace Hopper documented the first-ever computer “bug” when they discovered a moth stuck in the relay of the Harvard Mark II. They taped it into the logbook, called it a bug, and unknowingly gave birth to the language that still defines how we talk about errors in software today. While the story has been told countless times, what often gets overlooked is how that moment symbolized the beginning of testing as a discipline rather than a side task, marking the point where debugging became a responsibility that needed structure, focus, and people dedicated to the craft.

The Invisible Guardians Of Software Today

If you look at how testing is practiced today, testers are still the ones ensuring that products meet reality rather than just meeting the definition of “done” in a sprint. They are the people who have to think about what happens when thousands of users tap a button at the same time, or when a new operating system version breaks old flows, or when an overlooked edge case surfaces during a demo. For most teams, testers are both the safety net and the insurance policy, quietly holding everything together while juggling regression cycles, endless bug reports, shifting requirements, and late-stage changes. On World Tester’s Day, we recognize testers all over the world and their work which is preserving the user experience and protecting the reputation of products in ways that are often invisible to the end user.

The Future Is Smarter Testing

The next chapter of QA will not be about testers spending their days running cases or maintaining scripts, because that work is already too brittle and too slow for the way modern software is built. Instead, QA will become more like monitoring: you will set up a system that understands your product, adapts to change, and continues to run in the background, while your role shifts toward making sure that system is working as intended. This system will be AI-led, and at the same time, the role of humans will remain crucial, because the oversight, interpretation, and strategy cannot be automated away. At the same time, QA will no longer be the exclusive concern of large consumer app teams. As more development is done with AI and as more people gain access to building products, testing becomes even more important, not less. A world where anyone can ship an app is also a world where anyone can ship a broken one, unless testing is made effortless and accessible.

The most important shift is that the automation unlocked by AI will not stop at simply generating Appium scripts or test assets to be plugged into old workflows. That kind of patchwork only postpones the problem. What is really changing is the workflow itself, because testing cannot just be attached to development in the same ways as before. We are working on what this new workflow should look like, and while it will take time to mature, it is clear that the foundations of QA are being rewritten right now.

World Tester’s Day started with a moth in a relay, but it continues as a reminder that the discipline of testing is always evolving. As teams ship faster and the complexity of apps increases, testers deserve tools that match the scale of the challenge.
