A Story Stands Out In the Middle of All the AI Progress

In a moment where AI seems to be advancing almost weekly, with new models, capabilities and new promises about productivity and creativity, it is hard to ignore one of the most troubling episodes the industry has seen so far.

Over a short span of time, Grok generated millions of images that crossed clear ethical and legal boundaries, including sexualised and non-consensual content. What began as a product issue quickly escalated into something much larger, drawing public outrage, platform restrictions across countries and regulatory scrutiny that arrived faster than most companies are used to.

Brazil issued a deadline. The European Commission initiated proceedings under the Digital Services Act. Other regions restricted access while waiting for safety commitments. The story moved from timelines and screenshots to government offices almost overnight.

This Was Not a Glitch or a Hack

It is tempting to explain the Grok episode away as a moderation failure or a rushed launch, but that explanation misses the more uncomfortable reality. The system did not malfunction in a technical sense. It behaved within the space it was given, producing outputs that were possible under its design and constraints.

What failed was not a line of code but an assumption:

The assumption that harmful behaviour would remain marginal.
The assumption that safeguards would be tested gradually.
The assumption that real-world usage would mirror internal expectations.

At scale, those assumptions collapse very quickly. When generative systems are exposed to open-ended prompts and public distribution, edge cases stop being rare, they become volume.

Why AI Failures Escalate So Fast

Traditional software failures tend to be contained. A feature breaks, a service degrades, users complain and teams respond. There is usually a clear line between cause and fix.

AI failures are different because responsibility is harder to pinpoint, even though the outputs of these systems have real-world impact without any human decision being made at the moment. Users may exploit gaps, but products create the surface area for that exploitation.

This is why regulators are now stepping in more decisively. Not because AI is new, but because its failure modes do not respect borders, timelines, or internal roadmaps.

The Grok Story Is Bigger Than Grok

The lasting lesson here is not about one model or one company. It is about how quickly capability is being deployed compared to how slowly governance and accountability are being defined.

AI systems do not need malicious intent to cause harm. They only need unclear boundaries, broad access and incentives that reward output over restraint. When something goes wrong, the cost is no longer limited to a user session or a bad release. It becomes a public event with legal and reputational consequences. As AI continues to move from experimental tools to infrastructure, the industry will have to get more comfortable asking uncomfortable questions earlier. Not after a feature is shipped and not after regulators call.

The Kind of AI We Want to See More Of

None of this is an argument against AI. If anything, it is an argument for taking it more seriously than we currently do.

AI is powerful precisely because it acts at scale, removes friction and operates continuously. Those are the same qualities that make it genuinely useful in real systems. They are also the qualities that demand more care in how AI is designed, constrained, and observed once it moves beyond controlled environments and into everyday use.

At Quash, we are firmly pro-AI, but we are also realistic about what that commitment implies. Building with AI is about understanding how systems behave when they are exposed to real users, real data and real incentives that do not follow internal assumptions. Especially when things go wrong quietly, before they go wrong loudly.

We believe progress does not come from slowing AI down or treating it as something that must be feared into submission. It comes from building with enough context, visibility and intent that failures are understandable, correctable and owned by the people who deploy these systems. Responsibility is not a brake on innovation. It is what allows innovation to survive contact with the real world.

As AI becomes infrastructure rather than experimentation, this distinction will matter more. The industry will keep moving fast. The question is whether the systems we build are designed to withstand that speed without needing a scandal to force the conversation.

Each week, we put our execution engine to work on real apps.

This week, we put our execution engine to work on Myntra, one of India’s largest fashion and lifestyle shopping platforms. We started with a simple run: opening the app, navigating to the FWD store, searching for a black dress, adding it to the cart, and discarding the item. From this execution, Quash automatically built app knowledge, capturing how navigation, search, and cart flows work inside the Myntra app.

We then enriched this app knowledge manually by adding more context about Myntra’s key sections like FWD for GenZ fashion, Luxe for premium brands, and MNow for express delivery. With this context in place, we ran a new task: opening the Luxe store, adding a Prada perfume to the cart, and discarding it. The flow executed cleanly on the first attempt, using the previously learned structure of the app.

This run showed how app knowledge compounds over time and each execution makes the next one faster, more accurate and easier to run, without starting from scratch.

Quash Cloud Devices

Last week, we shipped Quash Cloud Devices, letting you run tests on real Android devices without setting up anything locally.

You can now connect to Android devices hosted in the Quash cloud directly from the app. Once connected, the device is ready to use immediately, with Mahoraga pre-installed and no additional configuration required.

Cloud devices show up alongside your other devices, can be used to run tasks and suites and support parallel execution. You can also enable screen mirroring to view and interact with the device when needed.

OpenAI has begun a global rollout of an AI-powered age prediction feature on ChatGPT to help identify accounts likely belonging to minors and automatically apply stronger content protections.
