Shrinking The Design Dev Gap

AI is transforming how software is built. Across the tech world, tools now let people generate code from natural language instructions, turning anyone with curiosity into a builder. Frontend development is the work of crafting interactive, user-friendly interfaces, and this is one of the first areas feeling this shift.

At an AI startup, an engineer shared how they eliminated dedicated frontend developers entirely, using AI tools to generate UIs from precise requirements. Development time dropped by 70%, and team sizes shrank dramatically. This trend shows a bigger picture: AI is speeding up coding and at the same time, it’s shrinking traditional role boundaries and empowering more people to contribute to development.

We saw a similar story at Quash. During our website revamp, we wanted to redo all of our website pages but faced a real problem: no dedicated frontend engineers. Our product engineers were heads-down building Quash itself, leaving a gap for the website.

Designers Step Into Code

That gap sparked a learning journey. Prakhar, our Cofounder decided to take it upon himself to learn frontend development from scratch. Each day brought small victories and a fair share of doubts and questions for Ayush. Soon, Anindya, our designer, joined the journey. Previously focused solely on designing in Figma, he started coding pages as well, bridging the gap between design and development firsthand.

AI tools have made the learning curve less intimidating. Cursor, with its context-aware features, proved to be particularly beginner-friendly. But the real insight came from understanding the fundamentals: how containers work, how sections interact, and what’s feasible in code. Designing in Figma is one thing; developing a fully functional, responsive page is another. Gaining that perspective changed the way our designers approach their work. Tools like Claude Code, recently partnered with Figma to turn mockups directly into production-ready code which shows how quickly design can start translating into working pages. On a related note, Claude also released Claude Sonnet 4.5, claiming boldly that it is the best coding model in the world.

The shift also highlighted the tension between freedom and constraints. Figma allows complete creative freedom, where you can add overlays, sections, or effects with little thought for implementation. Learning to code imposed constraints, forcing designers to plan ahead while still maintaining creativity. This balance made designs more deliberate, development more predictable, and collaboration smoother.

The Year To Learn Coding

The impact on our team has been tangible. Designers now code, engineers review, and AI serves as a bridge. The gap between design and development is shrinking, leading to faster iteration, improved collaboration, and better final outcomes. Human oversight ensures that speed doesn’t compromise quality.

This experience reinforced a key lesson: AI can accelerate work, but understanding the craft is indispensable. Curiosity, human insight, and AI tools combined are what truly drive results. Watching our designers learn to code has been transformative in execution speed and perspective. They now create designs that are smarter, implementable, and aligned with development realities.
